7 Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade in 2026

Flickering lights, tripping breakers, or adding an EV? Here are the warning signs your home needs a 200A or 400A panel upgrade — and what it costs.

Why your electrical panel matters

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system — it distributes electricity safely to every circuit and trips a breaker when a circuit is overloaded. But panels installed decades ago were sized for a fraction of what today's homes demand. Between EV chargers, central air, tankless water heaters, and kitchen appliance upgrades, a 100-amp panel that was fine in 1995 is now a bottleneck and a safety risk.

Upgrading to a modern 200-amp or 400-amp panel doesn't just add capacity — it improves safety, supports new technology, and brings your home up to current code. Here are the seven signs it's time to call a licensed electrician.

1. Breakers trip frequently

Occasional trips are normal. But if the same breaker trips every time you run the microwave and the AC together, your panel is overloaded. Frequent tripping means the panel can no longer safely handle your home's demand — a clear sign you've outgrown it.

2. Flickering or dimming lights

Lights that dim when the refrigerator kicks on point to a voltage drop caused by an undersized service or a failing panel. Left alone, voltage drops stress appliances and shorten their lifespan. A panel upgrade with properly sized service conductors eliminates the flicker.

3. You still have a fuse box or an outdated brand

Fuse boxes, Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels, and certain Zinsco panels are known safety hazards and are uninsurable by many carriers. If your home has one, an upgrade isn't optional — it's a safety necessity. Modern breaker panels with arc-fault (AFCI) and ground-fault (GFCI) protection are dramatically safer.

4. You're adding an EV charger, hot tub, or addition

A Level 2 EV charger pulls 30–60 amps on its own. A hot tub, a basement finish, or a home addition all add load. Before adding major appliances, a licensed electrician should run a load calculation — often the result is that a 100A service needs to become 200A or 400A to support the new loads safely.

5. Burning smell, warm panel, or scorch marks

These are emergency signs. A burning plastic smell near the panel, a panel that's warm to the touch, or scorch marks around breakers indicate overheating and a real fire risk. Turn off the main and call a 24/7 emergency electrician immediately.

6. You don't have enough breaker spaces

If every slot is full and you're using tandem breakers to squeeze in more circuits, you've maxed out the panel. A larger panel gives you room for future circuits — EV, solar, a generator transfer switch, or a finished basement — without dangerous workarounds.

7. Your home is over 25 years old

Even without symptoms, a 25+ year-old panel is due for an inspection. Codes have changed, breaker technology has improved, and components age. A whole-house safety inspection tells you whether your panel still meets today's standards.

What a panel upgrade costs

A 100A to 200A upgrade typically includes a new panel, main breaker, meter socket update if needed, grounding, and permits. A 200A to 400A upgrade is more involved and is recommended for large homes with multiple high-draw loads. We provide upfront, itemized quotes and offer financing so you can spread the cost over affordable monthly payments.

Frequently asked

How long does a panel upgrade take?

Most 100A to 200A upgrades are completed in a single day, with power restored the same day. Larger 400A upgrades or service relocations may take longer. We coordinate inspections with your municipality so the process is smooth.

Do I need to upgrade my meter socket too?

Often yes. Many older meter sockets are rated for 100A and must be replaced to support a 200A or 400A service. We'll assess this during your quote and include it in the price.

Can I finance a panel upgrade?

Yes. We offer financing on panel upgrades with affordable monthly payments and no prepayment penalty. Ask us during your quote for a personalized payment estimate.
